True Friendship: 36 Students from Ukraine Received Scholarship Funds and Living Support from NYCU

NYCU Ukrainian students Dmytro Ivakhnenkov (Left), Mariia Leontieva (Middle) and Oleksii Barabash (Right) helped spread information about the scholarship to the Ukraine students in need of support

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) started the Ukraine Program in April 2022 to aid Ukrainian students whose studies have been interrupted by the conflict in Ukraine. The program provides financial assistance to support Ukrainian students’ transportation, tuition, housing, and living expenses. In just four months, the program has amassed over NT$40 million in scholarship monies thanks to the tremendous support of numerous companies and NYCU alumni.

These funds have come from over 15 enterprises and alumni, including the Cheng-Han Education Charitable Trust Fund, Fubon Financial, TSMC Charity Foundation, Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, GlobalWafers, Phison Electronics, YTEC, the Spring Foundation of NCTU, JPC Connectivity, Verymulan, and the Holistic Health Tech.  In addition to providing financial assistance, these companies and individuals have assisted in the dissemination of scholarship information to deserving Ukrainian students.

It was anticipated that 36 Ukrainian students will enroll at NYCU to complete their studies in engineering, information engineering, industrial engineering, management, and the international program in inter-Asian cultural studies. Since the fall semester of 2022, these students have been studying in 19 departments across 11 colleges at NYCU, including the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Computer Science, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Management, College of Engineering, College of Biological Science and Technology, College of Hakka Studies, School of Law, College of Science, and College of Medicine.

In addition to providing financial assistance, NYCU provides free Chinese language classes to help Ukrainian students adjust to life in Taiwan. The university is committed to improving conditions for war-affected Ukrainian students and is urging other academic institutions to share information about the Ukraine Program with partners in Ukraine and worldwide. Vice President Shun-Hwa Wei noted that this program provides an opportunity for Taiwan and NYCU to fulfill their educational duties on the global stage and play a good role in the international community.
