Global Views has just announced the winners of the 2023 USR University Social Responsibility Award. National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (hereafter referred to as NYCU), who participated in the competition first time this year, won the best University-Industry Cooperation Award with the project “University-industry-government Cooperation Boosting Technological Power: Talent Cultivation of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Industries”. This year, 120 projects competed for seven different categories of awards, and 47 of them were chosen as finalists. Eventually, 23 awards were selected by 26 experts, with an overall award rate of 19.1% only.
According to NYCU, the university invests a large number of resources in course teaching, employment guidance, career counseling, and education planning for further studies, aiming to create a lifelong learning environment through high-quality education and humane assistance while connecting locally with enterprises. The value of the Human Resources Base in NYCU is to help youngsters find an ideal job with adequate salaries, which echoes the 4th goal of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) listed by the United Nations, that focused on “ensuring the inclusive and equitable quality of education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Additionally, it also aligns with line 8th that is restate “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”
During the awarding ceremony, Yung-Fu Chen, Vice President of NYCU, mentioned that the awarded project is a collaboration with the Taoyuan-Hsinchu-Miaoli Branch Office of the Workforce Development Agency under the Ministry of Labor. The project “Human Resources Base for Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Industries” is to provide training for future semiconductor and advanced technology industry talents, revitalize the domestic semiconductor industries, and further solve the problem of talent demand in the high-tech industries. With the short-term 300-hour training, people from different fields are empowered to switch to the semiconductor field and to raise their salaries ranging from NTD$35,000 to NTD$50,000 per month. The Ministry of Education has also requested to prepare a basic plan of action for another two-year degree program to train talents with liberal arts or social science backgrounds to ensure entry into the semiconductor industry.
As Chen indicated in the speech, NYCU as the top university in Taiwan should not only cultivate top engineers in the industry but also need to fulfill its social responsibility and value by establishing connections between the university and local communities; through the cultivation of talent, NYCU plays a significant role in creating sustainable development of the industry and the local community.
