NYCU’s “LIGHTFEST” Festival: A Dazzling Display of Light and Shadow

The first Light and Shadow Festival event, “LIGHTFEST,” was organized and held by student groups at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan

The first Light and Shadow Festival event, “LIGHTFEST,” was organized and held by student groups at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Taiwan. The Festival was grandly opened on December 4, 2023, illuminating the university campus.

When the post-pandemic era began, the lifestyle on campus has gradually become simplified. The sphere of activities shrinks to shuttle back and forth between the dormitory and the classroom, living a life in two points. As a result, mobility on campus has decreased, significantly reducing the frequency and warmth of interpersonal interactions among students. To address this issue, the NYCU students held the ‘LIGHTFEST’ Light and Shadow Festival, attempting to introduce the concept of “warmth shaping” and “campus features” from blazing and colorful illuminations to the engrossing light and shadow devices to combine the knowledge of STEM boasted by NYCU with humanities and arts through the medium of “light.”

“LightFest” blended NYCU’s STEM expertise with the realms of humanities and arts, all encapsulated within the captivating medium of ‘light’

The Light and Shadow Festival themed “LIGHTFEST” attempts to guide participants roaming around the NYCU island world through the contagion of light. The exhibitions divide into four main themes – “Forget,” “Alarm,” “Awaken,” and “Walpurgis Night” and develop into nine pieces of light and shadow devices and two pieces of projection works that are scattered outwardly from the NYCU Hao Ran Library, which is the center of the NYCU Guangfu Campus.

Light and shadow devices, along with projection works, adorned the surroundings of NYCU’s Hao Ran Library, the center of the NYCU Guangfu Campus

Through the use of technology, such as software programming, hardware sensors, and radars, interactive 3D light and shadow works are created to build emotional connections between people through interaction. They displayed nine pieces of light and shadow devices and one interactive projection to create a unique campus experience. This event brings hope and warmth and showcases the harmonious combination of art, technology, and humanity to the masses.

“LIGHTFEST” was served by Professor June-Hao Hou at the Graduate Institute of Architecture, NYCU, as the primary advisor and by the known light and shadow artist, Professor Ling-Li Tseng, as the core advisor of the work devices. They guided the students in exploring the concepts of light and shadow, encouraging them to design hardware devices to create an engaging and interactive experience for the audience at the “LIGHTFEST.” The instructors inspire the students to unleash their creative potential by infusing their creativity and unique perspectives.

The two-week Light and Shadow Festival “LIGHTFEST” started from December 4 to December 17 and displayed works on the NYCU Guangfu Campus
