Outstanding Alumni of NYCU Unveiled! Five Alumni Attend Award Ceremony Together

Five 2024 outstanding National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) alumni attended the award ceremony held on February 28th. The 2024 cohort included Huey-Chuan Hsieh, former CEO of Evergreen Marine Corporation and hailed by the media as the “King of Navigation,” Hsu Ma, former Vice President of Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), Liang-You Lee, founding chairman of the Information Managers Association, Shih-Yuan Chen, Chairman of Optoma Corporation, and Yen-Ting Chen were recently awarded as the 2023 Outstanding Physician. It was a joyous occasion as the alumni returned to campus after many years to reunite with their classmates and celebrate their achievements. Congratulations to the 2024 NYCU Outstanding Alumni!

Huey-Chuan Hsieh, an outstanding alumnus of the Department of Transportation & Logistics Management, led Evergreen Marine Corporation as the general manager during the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hsieh’s leadership skills earned him the nickname “King of Navigation” from the media, and he summarized the current situation in a seven-character verse during the earnings results conference. Although he retired this year, his contributions to the transportation management industry continue to be recognized.

After receiving the Outstanding Alumni Award from President Chi-Hung Lin of NYCU, Hsieh expressed his gratitude for the pinnacle in his career path and his joy for the honor and luck that guided the way. In a seven-character regulated verse, he reflected on his forty years since stepping out of the university gate, and glancing back, he realized he is over fifty.

Hsu Ma, a former Vice President of TVGH who recently retired, is a renowned plastic surgeon specializing in treating burns and scalds. He graduated from the School of Medicine and obtained his post-doctoral degree from the Institute of Clinical Medicine. He served at Taipei Veterans General Hospital for almost 40 years and was present during major burn incidents in Taiwan, including the 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosion and the 2015 Formosa Fun Coast Dust explosion. Two years ago, Hsu Ma was awarded the Taiwan Medical Contribution Award. Having retired last month, he returned to his alma mater today to receive the award.

Liang-You Lee, who founded the Information Management Association in 1982, has devoted 42 years to promoting enterprise information processing and applications, making him a key driver of e-commerce in Taiwan. After graduating from the Institute of Electrical and Control Engineering, he steadily climbed the corporate ladder from a grassroots engineer to the CEO of a multinational corporation. With a diverse career spanning from traditional industries to high technology and from local enterprises to foreign companies, Lee has become a respected consultant, author, and mentor in recent years. He also serves as a board member for several listed companies and guides them in establishing AI and big data intelligent application systems.

Shih-Yuan Chen, the current Chairman of Optoma Corporation, is an alumnus of the Department of Computer Science and one of the founding members of Coretronic Corporation. He pioneered Coretronic’s early expansion into Europe, laying the foundation for Optoma’s independence as a brand under Coretronic Corporation. Leveraging Coretronic’s strong technical capabilities, Optoma has expanded its global presence and adopted a localized brand strategy. Today, Optoma is a leading global brand in digital projection and imaging solutions, serving over 150 countries worldwide.

Yen-Ting Chen, an alumnus of the Department of Dentistry, was selected as the 2023 Good Doctor of “For a Better Life” last year. With over 30 years of experience in medical practice, Yen-Ting Chen has served as a clinical dentist and held key positions, such as the chairman of the Taiwan Dental Association, a member of the Ministry of Health and Welfare National Health Insurance Committee, and a member of the Oral Medicine Committee. He has played a significant role in shaping domestic oral medicine policies, particularly in the preventive treatment of periodontal disease, which has had a decisive impact. Through his work, Yen-Ting Chen vigorously promotes oral health knowledge and strives for oral medical equality, especially for disadvantaged groups. He is also a frequent guest in the news media.
