Against an era where computing power equates to national strength and data is the core of the new economy, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) established the Data Finance Innovation Center (DFI) earlier this year. The center aims to advance new financial developments centered on data and to emphasize technological diplomacy focused on standards and international cooperation.
On June 10th, President Chi-Hung Lin, along with the DFI’s executive director, former Chairperson of the National Communications Commission Ting-I Chan, consultant Chih-Wei Chang, Yushan Scholar, and Chair Professor Seiji Samukawa, and National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) member Chih-Wei Chen, visited the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Japan.
NYCU aimed to explore new forms of academic and industrial collaboration based on its strong foundation in semiconductors and information and communication technology.
Engaging with Leading Japanese Institutions: SPF and GRIPS
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) is a major international nonprofit organization in Japan dedicated to promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) through various collaborative projects in the Indo-Pacific region. This visit was hosted by SPF President Atsushi Sunami, where both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI), with a particular focus on the Taiwan-Japan semiconductor industry ecosystem.
The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) is Japan’s premier policy research center, specializing in policy science research and serving as a think tank for national strategic goals. It is also a crucial platform for industry, government, and academic exchanges between Japan and countries worldwide. This visit was hosted by GRIPS President Hiroko Ota, where both sides exchanged views on new types of industry-government-academia collaboration mechanisms in the digital era and planned to promote bilateral cooperative international programs.
NYCU Advances Taiwan-Japan Tech Diplomacy and Sustainable Development
President Chi-Hung Lin stated, “Our university aspires to become a world-class institution and a hub for research and innovation in the global high-tech industry. We align our development with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. We look forward to future collaboration between Taiwan and Japan, focusing on intelligence, sustainability, and technology to shape a new interdisciplinary academic and industrial exchange model.”
President Lin emphasized, “Through concrete actions, our university demonstrates the friendship between Taiwan and Japan, deepening exchanges centered on science and technology. This visit marks a starting point, and we look forward to welcoming SPF President Atsushi Sunami and GRIPS President Hiroko Ota to NYCU in the future. We aim to build a sustainable future together through continuous exchange visits.”
