NYCU and Lite-On Technology Wins the Small Cell Forum Award with Groundbreaking 5G O-RAN Security Schemes

JUDGES’ CHOICE of the SCF Awards by the Small Cell Forum (SCF) Jury

NYCU’s 5G information security technology has garnered international recognition. With the support of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) through the project “Key Technology R&D Program of Communication System for Next Generation,” NYCU collaborated with Lite-On Technology Co. to develop the “Secure Communication Scheme” technology. In 2023, this technology received the annual global mobile communication industry award: the Special Award for JUDGES’ CHOICE from the International Small Cell Forum (SCF). This technology is designed for small-scale commercial base stations. It has also been shortlisted for the “Outstanding Software and Service Technology Award” within the SCF. Notably, NYCU is the sole team in Taiwan to achieve this award.

Professor Ta-Sung Lee, from NYCU’s Institute of Communications Engineering, discussed his team comprising Assistant Researcher En-Cheng Liou and others. The team has developed a timely security monitoring and management scheme using the O-RAN management system and rAPP application. This innovation introduces a fully automated monitoring and timely warning technology for security risks associated with open-source schemes introduced by the open architecture. This technology also effectively addresses the latest security vulnerabilities, significantly reducing security risks in the 5G private network.

Regarding O-RAN SMO security management, the standardized O-RAN interface swiftly detects the network environment and classifies various security risks accordingly. According to Dr. En-Cheng Liou, the 5G O-RAN Security management schemes have stood out in international competition due to the support of NSTC, NYCU, and Lite-On. With the finalized technical integration between Lite-On and the O-RAN base station, the project holds great potential for validating the schemes in various fields.

Sander Su, General Manager of the Communication Division at Lite-On Technology, expressed, “We feel deeply honored to receive recognition from the SCF Small Cell Industry Awards 2023, a prestigious accolade within the global mobile communication industry. In the realm of 5G private network information security management, Lite-On has been diligently advancing 5G O-RAN small cell and RIC technologies. These efforts are aimed at providing more comprehensive, efficient, and secure solutions for vertical field applications. Our collaboration with NYCU has yielded innovative results, combining the 5G O-RAN Small Cell and RIC management platform with AI-driven information security and image recognition capabilities. This integration facilitates rAPP security control and precise AI image recognition and monitoring. These advancements are poised for versatile applications across diverse sectors like smart campuses, smart factories, and intelligent transportation in the future. This collaboration promises to elevate the overall O-RAN network security technology to unprecedented heights.”

5G information security and digital firmware play an essential role in various crucial applications. Achieving information security and safeguarding with the 5G CT open architecture necessitates the seamless integration of information security and communication technologies across domains. NYCU has maintained active engagement in discussions within 3GPP/O-RAN standard organizations. As a third-party developer and validator for rAPP/xAPP user scenarios, NYCU has established a robust industry-government-academia cooperation model. The team’s remarkable accomplishments have garnered recognition from esteemed international organizations and exhibitions, including MWC Barcelona, O-RAN PlugFest, and SCF.
